Our friends at A-1 Towing/Ross Body & Frame approached us about building their next heavy-duty wrecker. A-1 Towing is a big presence in Allentown, and so is Mack trucks, as its biggest production facility is located there. What better way to combine these two big parts of Allentown’s story than with one very capable Vulcan heavy-duty wrecker.

Many years ago, Mack trucks were a staple of the towing industry. A Mack R Model with a Holmes 750 was the pinnacle of a heavy-duty wrecker (in fact, we may even have one hidden in a barn). But over the years, Mack chassis became more common in vocational and construction equipment and fewer wreckers could be found. A-1 Towing aimed to give a nod to Mack’s heavy wrecker heritage with this wrecker.

This featured truck build highlights a 2021 Vulcan V-70 35-ton Heavy-Duty Wrecker. The V-70 is one of Vulcan’s best-selling heavy-duty wreckers. Notable features/upgrades on this particular unit include an underboom third winch, hydraulic extendable rear outriggers, and an SP20000 SidePuller Recovery System. This unit has a CB of 180″ and a Vulcan pass through box.

This A-1 Towing unit is well-equipped for towing and recovery. Some high-value accessories include an A/C Inverter Kit for rechargeable hand tools, an extensive arsenal of towing and lifting attachments, chains, snatchblocks, straps and more (see a list below after the photos)

Notice the gold bulldog on the hood? That signifies an all-Mack powertrain on this Vulcan V-70. A-1 chose a Mach Granite chassis with a Mack Diesel engine and Mack M-Drive automatic transmission. Many vocational trucks and road tractors have made the transition to automatic transmissions, but heavy-duty wreckers have tended to hold out and stick with the traditional manual transmission options to give the driver more hands-on control of his load. The M-Drive feels as close to a manual transmission heavy-duty wrecker that I’ve ever experienced. Some automatic transmissions make you feel like you’re going full-throttle through the gears. This truck has a more feathered feel similar to a manual transmission. We think the driver will be pleased with it – whether he’s towing in the snow or sitting in a traffic jam.

Roadside safety is becoming more challenging each day. If a passing driver doesn’t see the bright colors on this unit, they won’t miss the LED flashers, light bars and strobe light kits that are mounted all around this truck. The Mack chassis is equipped with a four-camera Safety Vision system for enhanced driver visibility.
